i have a 1983 Amiga that i use for recording....reeeaaalllyyy nice computer man...simply put, its beastly....ive never used nothing like it before....
but yeah seperate computer for recording is the ideal way to go about it....strip the whole system down to bare bones...no extra programs/utilities installed AT ALL except what u use for music, and the necessary system files themselves...

we just bought a second computer for my wife to use and for all my other shit that ain't music... and I just upgraded my computer a second time... it's a Dell Dimension somethin', 2.6ghz dual core... it had 2gb ram and 250gb hard drive at first... I bumped it up to 4gb and added a 320gb hard drive and a second dvd drive the first time I upgraded it... now I've bumped it up to 8gb ram and added a second monitor... I also got rid of all the unnecessary bullshit on it...

You should build a good computer and use it for everything. You can use a partition for recording and photoshop and a partition for everything else.
