Lucky You (Uses Joyner Lucas' Instrumental)

I've been working on this song for months, finally finished the lyrics today and just recorded tonight. My mic has a pop filter on it, and I'm using a turtlebeach headset to record on. I used Audacity to edit the audio.

I used Joyner Lucas' song Lucky You's instrumental. I put a lot of hard work into this so please let me know how I can improve.

My first recordings were done with a $30 sony dynamic mic and while using Cool Edit/Adobe Audition 1.5 and I placed the mic on a table clip I got for less then $15 I think. I'm a bit under the rock when it comes to phones and all that but there are people on this forum that use their phones to record and still manage to have decent audio quality, really look into investing in at least a dynamic mic or even going the free route and checking out those recording phone apps, I'm pretty sure Nigma had a suggestion for it.

Do not buy a dynamic mic to record vocals. Higher end ones sound fine, but condenser microphones are made to record vocals. you can get a decent USB one for 50-100 bucks. If you want to know how to make your vocals sound better, YouTube tutorials are very helpful. My biggest recommendation: Do not crunch syllables or rap fast before you've developed a natural repition of flow. It will set you back. Practice on minimally filling out your syllable counts on slower, less complicated beats. I understand the fascination with certain instrumentals. Until you've developed better skills all around, I would stay away from that. This took me years to achieve because when I started, most people were elitists and did not want to help. Work on developing your flow most of all if you want to do audio. Like I said, barely fill your syllable count and use slower beats. Once you've gotten it down, then you can increase the BPM and syllable count. Good luck.

^These guys offered some good advice about condenser mics. Nab one man!

Did I catch you're only 13? That's not bad at all for your age man. You remind me of me when I was just starting - you got TONS of potential, just need to polish it up.

You have a concept of flow - work on riding that snare and finding different ways to explore the beat.

Delivery wise you were okay, but noticeably shaky. Confidence will come - keep working at that craft.

You almost set yourself up for failure by hopping on this beat considering Em and Joyner's track was really fast paced and lyrical - you're not there yet. But this is a foundation from where you can build yourself TO that.

Don't be afraid to go hunting for some unique beats to call your own.

    Keep dropping man.

Not bad if you are 13 and mixed the vocals yourself. You can tell that it is a cheaper mic because it is so grizzly even if you boosted the eq around 2k hertz to make the vocals pop more you wouldn't be able to get rid of the grizzly sound. I like that your trying to be lyrical, but your flow keeps getting knocked off beat in different places.

I don't agree that you should get on a slower beat or spit less syllables, but you do have to make sure that your not trying to say so many syllables that your going into the next bar. In the different spots where you were off beat you could always cut up your vocals and manually move them where they were supposed to be...
