Ghost Dog is one of my favorites. I watched Ichi a couple days ago and I was kind of disappointed. I was expecting a badass Zatouchi-esque heroine but I didn't really get that feel from her.
There's a Korean movie called The Swordsman that was pretty killer.
If you want a strong samurai female, watch any of the Blood movies. Live action or anime.
