.. The Border Between Nepal & Tibet, Mt. Everest, 1953 ..
Stood at the base of the mountain, they looked to the sky
To the top of the thirty thousand foot sculpture of ice
Carved by mother nature's hands, deep beneath the snow it seats
Where a husband and wife team have long hoped to reach ..
It's frozen peak .. stood upright & profound in place
.. The couple took their first steps up the mountain face ..
The air looked Haunted by Fog .. & heavy Snow Fell
As both hoped all would Go well on their Jaunt To the Top
Cold pierced the skin, a bitter wind made the struggle awkward
But maintaining composure; the couple stumbled forward
And fought against the elements .. to brave the weather
.. Thinking they'd be safer if they both stayed together ..
Side by side, holdin' hands - they'd covered a fair distance
Snowfall impairing their vision, as they walked the frozen land
The chosen path they'd taken then reached a sudden stop
An enourmous gap in the glacier had formed; they couldnt cross
Without a huge ammount of willpower, effort and strength
.. They decided to set up camp for the night there & then ..
.. And rest themselves .. Seeing as their limbs were hurting ..
.. So they'd sleep till morning, then begin their journey ..
.
.
.
.. Overnight their train of thought run straight into a podium ..
See, along with the pain, they'd bought a mild case of pneumonia
Leaving them both weakened, bodies beginning to cease up
But this was the oppourtunity that they'd always dreamed of
A chance to conquer Everest, the highest peak on Earth
.. A chance to ascend the mountain together, & be the first ..
.. Couple to reach its summit .. To be a part of history ..
.. To scale this freezing citadel, its giant Heart glistening ..
As the couple bridged the gap, and continued forth
Oxygen was scarce; the food supplies provided warmth
.. Nearing the peak .. Another obstacle seemed to blossom ..
.. But, already behind schedule .. they needed to cross it ..
They'd come too far now to say they'd gave up hope
So in a hurried attempt, they attached the safety ropes
And began scaling the face, winters previous years tell
.. As their foot hold gave way, and both mountaineers fell ..
.. The safety ropes caught them, but both screamed in fright ..
Their voices echoed thru the valley; both feared for their lives
Suddenly the mountain roared with the most thunderous sound
.. As several hundred tonn's of snow came plundering down ..
.. The cliff face .. An avalanche had cleared the way ..
.. The adventures buried alive, and never seen again ..

.. Twenty years passed .. New explorers looked to the sky ..
.. Hoping they too could stand atop the sculpture of ice ..
A team lead by experts, looking to scale the mountains face
.. Then return home to a heart-warming round of praise ..
Nearing the mountains peak, A researchers observant eyes
.. Discovered two human bodies had been preserved in ice ..
.. And upon closer inspection; the male's frozen pocket ..
.. Held photo's of the pair, encased in a golden locket ..
He'd hoped to propose; thinking they'd reach the peak before dark
But he never got the chance to really speak from his heart
And that taught me a valuable lesson im building upon
.. 'Cause You Dont Know What You've Got 'Til It's Gone ..
